45 Live Lowdown #12 - Monk One

45 Live Lowdown #12
Monk One

Our 45 Live brother in New York, Wax Poetics kingpin and seasoned pro, the thouroughly awesome Monk One.

1. Where are you based?
Brooklyn, New York

 2. Why 45s?
Confession: I like all sizes of records! But 45s are particularly convenient to tote to gigs, whether your mode of transport be airway or subway.

 3. Your inspiration/mentor/hero?
My DJ idol is Kool DJ Red Alert.

4. Your most elusive 45, what is it and how long have you been looking?
My most elusive 45 is definitely a King promo of Vicki Anderson’s 'I Want To Be In The Land Of Milk And Honey', which I bought many years ago, then slipped inside an LP sleeve at a gig for safekeeping. Afterwards I couldn’t remember which sleeve it was in, the LPs got shuffled around and I have never found it, even though it’s somewhere amidst my collection. Extremely elusive little bugger!

5. Best ever dig?
My early digging days in 90s NYC were pretty great, with dirt cheap 'Synthetic Substitution', 'Impeach The President' and other funk standards. But more recent times, I’d say the stashes of stuff I’ve gotten access to in South America have been pretty mind-blowing.

6. All originals pressings?
I like records that have lived a little. Whether they are ‘original pressings’ or not doesn’t matter to me; I just want them to sound loud and a little gritty.

7. Do you hoard or buy and sell?
Unfortunately I’m a hoarder. I am seeking help for this condition.

8. How many 45s have you got and how do you catalogue/store them?
4000? I store them any way I can. They usually end up being grouped by whatever gig I last played them at.

9. Cover up or share the love?
Spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way!

10. What're your top 3 LPs tracks that you wish had been pressed onto 7”?
If there’s something I really want on 7-inch I’ll get it custom cut. But let’s see, for fun… How about:
Free The Robots 'Jazzhole'...

Manuel Gottsching 'E2-E4 (J-Walk Remix)'...

Tuxedo 'Number One'...

11. Biggest disaster whilst DJing?!
Not getting paid.
