45 Live Lowdown #3 - Florian Keller

45 Live Lowdown #3
Florian Keller

It's safe to say that Florian is one of the world's most accomplished DJs, collectors and archivists of serious funk/soul/jazz 45s and music in general.

1. Where are you based?
Munich, Germany.

2. Why 45s?
My main music was always on this format (tough independent Funk), plus it’s less to carry while travelling.

3. Your inspiration/mentor/hero?
The mid 80’s Rare Groove / Jazz Dance Gang: Femi & Dodge, Norman Jay, Gilles Peterson, Snowboy & certainly Jan Weissenfeldt from The Poets Of Rhythm, the only other guy in town who dug that stuff as much as I do.

4. Your most elusive 45, what is it and how long have you been looking?
Co-Real Artists 'What About You (In The Wold Today)', I’ve been desperate for a couple of years in the late 90’s until Egon came over to DJ at our Funk Squad club night. He gave me a copy after I gave him a copy of Creations Unlimited 'Corruption Is The Thing'. I’m sure we both had no idea how the prices of those 2 would develop one day (at least myself definitely didn’t).

5. Best ever dig?
Ebony Rhythm Band 'Soul Heart Transplant' for a tenner (swopped them back then when the reissue came out to Malcom Catto & Ian Wright for a load of great rekkids).

6. All originals pressings?
If requested no problem at all but as you can see in the last question i’m personally fine with a proper sounding reissue when letting the OG go means more great records.

7. Do you hoard or buy and sell?
Buy and sell!

8. How many 45s have you got and how do you catalogue/store them?
Maybe some 3000 stored in old Doctors steel file cabinets.

9. Cover up or share the love?
Share!

10. What’s your top 3 LPs tracks that you wish had been pressed onto 7”?
Joe Bataan ‘Call My Name’ (hello Vamisoul-gang!!)

Linda Williams 'Elevate Our Minds’

Gregory James Edition 'Ain’t No Sunshine’

11. Biggest disaster whilst DJing?!
Empying a 3000 capacity tent at WOMAD with Fela 'Na Poi' after it went so well (and I still don’t understand why).
