Back in the day, Robert Jones and Berdell Gaston referred to themselves as ‘sidemen’. They played with a variety of groups, big bands and combos, but never launched solo careers. Their musical journey started in the home of southern soul , the legendary Muscle Shoals. It was here that Mr Gaston penned this amazing track ‘Do you get the message’, recording the first demo using the vocal skills of Mr Jones.
A version of the track was released by the Grey Imprint Band on the Clear Hill label, but both Messrs Jones & Gaston were not part of the group!! Robert Tauman was responsible for the Clear Hill recording, bringing together a clutch of Dayton Ohio musicians to release what has become a monster elusive 4 figure rarity within the current soul scenes.
Avid collector, soul connoisseur and veteran DJ Dave Thorley unearthed the original vocal demo by Jones & Gaston and presented it to the Cannonball crew for their assistance. What we have here, is a collaboration between the original writers and artists, the man who discovered the demo, and the studio that could bring to life the vision of Berdell Gaston.
