Cruisic 'Jazz Carnival' (Jazz Room Records)

'Jazz Carnival' / 'Pacific 707'
(Jazz Room Records)
A couple of sublime jazz reworks of classic songs on the legendary Paul Murphy's label Jazz Room Records here, and boy, I'm not sure the word sublime is even efficient enough.
When it comes to the term 'classic', often bandied about way too loosely and inappropriately, it can be shrugged off without the gravitas it should demand. But not so with Azymuth's 'Jazz Carnival', a true classic from 79 that was a mainstay in the early 80s and right through to the 90s/2000s warehouse, rare groove and jazz dance scenes. Japanese combo Cruisic have taken the original, slowed it down and created a cosmic samba version that is as lush as one could imagine.
But flip over and they cover 808 State's 'Pacific 707' to raise one's eyebrows even further! A seminal acid house track from 1989. Cruisic take it and jazz it to the max with superb piano and a faithful clarinet sound. The 'house' is removed and in their place swinging drums now adds dynamism and flair.
This is deep modern jazz dance at its best.
