Blasting out of the speakers from France is a 45 that is already a contender for my 45 of the year. The A side 'Beat Grinder's Monkey' is an edit of some old Mod song, and one that I don't know (Shazam turns up nothing!), but boy oh boy, what Dard and Box On have done with it is nothing short of spectacular. It kicks off with rock solid beats and a bassline from heaven before the guitar signals the vocal to come in, and bam, we're back in the swinging 60s. I'm sure one of you will know the source material here, but for me it doesn't matter because the result is a bona-fide dancefloor rocker; all the sass of that Beatle-esque 60s sound, with an evident injection of panache in its treatment to bring it comfortably into the realms of the freestylin' DJ. The bass and drum part could easily be a DJ Format production, I was almost waiting for Abdominal to pop up!
