Mako And Mr Bristow 'Stank Soul Edits Vol 7'
'One Sweet Bomb' / 'Why Do You Bass Me Up?'
(BBP)
They boys are back with volume 7 of their Stank Soul Edits, btw what exactly does 'stank' mean? smelly? Answers on a postcard please...anyway, smelly or sweet, Mako & Mr Bristow have been rummaging through their stacks of raw soul 45s and re-editing their favourites so that they stack up next to more modern beatsy platters in a more sonically balanced way. You know what I mean, just listen to Craig Charles on 6 Music and he'll play so much funk and soul that's been housed up or beat-ed up so that the dancefloor may more easily be tempted upon, such is the fickleness of more mainstream audiences where original rare soul might be a step too far for some. So the re-edit is here to stay and is hugely popular.
On Stank Soul 7, it is firmly the A side 'One Sweet Bomb' that wins out, a sister soul nugget from Gloria Lucas which is from a rare Flodavieur 45 from 1969. Raw soul it is, with Gloria's honest and beautifully flawed voice floating above a joyous major chord backing. And here the boys add extra drums and bass for the needle to register on the phatness meter. So that's it pretty simply, easily accessible dancefloor soul music!
