Melvin Sparks 'If You Want My Love' (Rocafort)

Melvin Sparks
'If You Want My Love' / 'Get Down With The Get Down'
(Rocafort)

Melvin Sparks enjoyed a long career in music as a session player for Blue Note Records and Prestige Records through the 60's and early 70's, picking his guitar to endless classic jazz outings from the likes of Jackie Wilson & Marvin Gaye, Jack McDuff, Lonnie Smith, Charles Earland, Sonny Stitt, Lou Donaldson, Rusty Bryant, Sonny Phillips to name a few. On a move to Westbound Records, he recorded these what were deemed to be commercial tunes as part of the 'Melvin Sparks '75' LP. Mid 70's lush production, funky, soulful is what it is. It may have got poor reactions at that time - because compared the raw grit and jazz of his 60's performances this is quite poppy - but now this orchestral sound is gleefuly embraced. Flip for 'Get Down With The Get Down', an altogether funkier cut with wonderful stereo production from Bernie Mendelson and Melvin Sparks, one for cultured BBoys!

First time on a 7 for these tracks, cop one now, or get a double pack from the bandcamp page as a special deal.
