The Anglos 'Broke Down Piece Of Man' (Soul4real)

The Anglos
'Broke Down Piece Of Man' / 'Four Walls Of Gloom'
(Soul4real)

Absolutely banging soul music, and another prime example of 'there will never be an end to discovering music'. You can spend decades immersed in any genre, and even if you think you're an authority, you will be constantly surprised when something old gets unearthed, rescued from old studio tapes and released for the first time some 50 years later. Such is the case with this wonderful 45 from The Anglos, lovingly curated by Soul4real. The Anglos released a couple of singles in the 60s that were popular in the Northern and Mod scenes, but these tracks here were recorded for the Botanic label that never saw the light of day. I would argue that these are the best tracks The Anglos have done! The A side is a monster, back snapping drums, big horns and phenomenal vocals, a real orchestral and stonkin' soul cut. The B side is mid tempo perfection with another orchestral arrangement with a natural, effortless raw soul vocal from Joe Webster. This will be one of the best soul releases of 2018.
