The Meters - Sing A Simple Song (Matasuna)
23rd April 2021
A: The Meters - Sing A Simple Song
B: The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band – Giggin' Down 103rd
(Matasuna)
If we're talkin' funk in it's most purest form then both The Meters and The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band must enter the conversation. Both groups forged a path in the late 60's touring the States extensively with their special blend of "funky-bottom-bottom-funky" cuts that have proved to be timeless. Thanks to the good people at Matasuna Records we now that two monster funk forty-five sides on the one disc for the very first time. The Meters turn Sly's 'Sing A Simple Song' on it's head, shakes it for all eternity while wailing at the very top of it's lungs. If this doesn't move you, well, I can't do nuttin' for ya...man. On the flip, The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band turn in 'Giggin' Down 103rd' for what proves to be a tour-de-force from this Los Angeles band. Dynamite funk action from the jump, this track illustrates their love for a funky guitar lick and a passion for that driving horn section.
