The Tornadoes & Tyra Hammond
'You Got Me Thinkin' / 'You Got Me Thinkin' (Instr)'
(Mukatsuku)
Over in Australia and New Zealand, there's been a raw funk movement bubbling away very nicely for a good number of years now, and it has produced a bunch of really great bands that have captured the required grit and soul for admirable authenticity.
Think The Bamboos, Deep Street Soul and most definitely The Tornados with Tyra Hammond. This particular nugget first appeared on From The Crate Records in 2006, then Mukatsuku put it on a 12" along with Kiwi funkers Open Souls and now on a fresh new 7", complete with an unreleased instrumental.
The production here on 'You Got Me Thinkin' is hard as nails, sounding like it's recorded in a warehouse with natural reverb aplenty. PHAT-back drums, cranked up amp on the geetar, wicked horns and then there's the vocal...Tyra smashed this out of the park. Her delivery is just real, real like soul singers of the 60s and not the wack overproduced autotune shite that often masquerades as vocals these days.
The total is a sure-fire raw funk smasher, great to have a new issue cos the OG has got pricy, and equally great to have the unreleased instrumental, especially if you're going to get doubles to juggle.
